Det moderne globale handelssystem bygger på frihandel, der tillader, at varer og services cirkulerer mellem landegrænser uden hindringer. Blandt politikere er der bred enighed om, at frihandel skaber både jobs, vækst og velstand over hele verden. Det er den dominerende fortælling, der har defineret tilgangen til international handel gennem en årrække. Frihandel er på tværs af ideologiske skillelinjer blevet hyldet som vejen til at mindske fattigdom i det globale syd, og mere frihandel er endda skrevet ind som en del af FN’s verdensmål.
Rapporten ”Myterne om Frihandel – Konsekvenserne af et skævt system” stiller sig særdeles kritisk overfor dette dominerende frihandelsnarrativ og argumenterer for, at nutidens globale handelssystem tværtimod fordrer en ekstrem global ulighed, hvor både mennesker og natur i det globale syd bliver ladt i stikken, alt imens Vesten og de multinationale virksomheder bliver rigere og rigere.
På denne lanceringskonference vil vi stille skarpt på denne grundlæggende kontrast mellem politikernes frihandelsnarrativ og den oplevede virkelighed i det globale syd. Til formålet har vi allieret os med Admire Mutizwa, der vil holde et oplæg om EU’s handelspolitik set fra et globalt syd-perspektiv. Admire er zimbabwisk handelsaktivist og økonom og har fulgt EPA-forhandlingerne (Economic Partnership Agreements) mellem EU og de involverede afrikanske regioner igennem en årrække.

The global trade system is based on free trade, which allows goods and services to circulate across borders unhindered. There exists a broad agreement amongst politicians that free trade creates jobs, growth, and prosperity worldwide. It is the dominating narrative, which has defined the approach to international trade for several years. Across ideological divides, free trade has been praised as the way to reduce poverty in the Global South, and more free trade has even been included in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The report “the Myths of Free Trade – the consequences of a crooked system” is highly critical of this dominant free trade narrative and argues that today’s global trade system, on the contrary, is dependent on extreme global inequality, where both people and nature in the Global South are left in the lurch, all the while the West and its multinational corporations become richer and richer.
At this conference, we will focus on this fundamental contrast between the politician’s free trade narrative and the experienced reality in the Global South. For this purpose, we have allied ourselves with Admire Mutizwa, who will give a presentation on the EU trade policy from the perspective of the Global South. Admire is a Zimbabwean trade activist and economist and has followed the EPA (Economic Partnership Agreements) negotiations between the EU and the African regions involved over a period of years.
